The Jesse Tree

Looking for an AMAZING way to share the real meaning of Christmas with your children? Then buy the book...The Advent Jesse Tree: Devotions for Children and Adults to prepare for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas. It is a very simple book with 25 devotions taken throughout the Bible that ultimately lead up to the birth of Christ. Each night you do a devotion, an ornament is hung on the tree to symbolize that particular message. For example, when we talked about Noah's Ark, I had found a miniature Noah's ark ornament. Some ornaments are homemade...some bought. I started this about three years ago, when Carlie was only two. This year truly has been special, because the girls are older and have really gotten into it. You can simply read the devotion and hang the ornament...or go further with games, songs, drama, etc. In years past, we have actually set up a tent in the living room to describe when God called Abraham to leave his country...to turning out all the lights and using flashlights to describe the creation story...then God said, "Let there be light."
Here are some highlights from this year:
* The first devotion is creation, and last year I actually found a "globe" ornament. A few days after the devotion, Mollie was carrying around the globe ornament...singing, "He's got the whole world in His hands..." SO PRECIOUS...then CRASH! Apparently, Mollie didn't have the "Whole World" in her hands. LOL The ornament crashed onto the floor in a million pieces. Here I come Hobby Lobby.
* Then one night we decided to make Joseph's coat of many colors. We got out clear contact paper and tore all sorts of colored tissue paper and stuck it onto the contact paper...then put another piece of contact paper on the back (sealing it somewhat), and cut out the shape of a coat. It looked really cool, but the amazing part was when we hung it on the tree. The colored lights made the tissue paper almost translucent...really beautiful! Then Carlie made several paper doll dresses. LOTS of FUN!
* The funniest was two nights ago, when we were talking about David and the ornament was suppose to be a slingshot. I didn't have that ornament so I found a rubber band. After the devotion, I got the rubber band and some cotton balls. We pretended like Travis was Goliath and practice shooting him...which lead to wrestling...a BLAST. But perhaps the funniest was watching Ellie get excited watching them. She started talking and kicking those legs...almost like "Let me have a chance. I can bust ole Goliath up, too."

I'm connected to The Network!

Yes, I'm now connected to "The Network"...Verizon Wireless. Santa (aka Travis) thought I finally needed a cell phone. So if you have Verizon...tell me ASAP, because we can talk all the time for FREE. My other precious friends will have to use my anytime minutes or wait till I get home.
It was funny. The service guy was totally shocked I had never had a cell phone before.
Travis said I had to read the owner's manual cover to cover, but I'm hoping to get my super tech savvy sister-in-law, Lanie, to help me get some cool ringtones, plug in my numbers, etc. during the Christmas break.
Speaking of precious girlfriends, here is the 2008 Christmas Bunko picture I missed with some dear friends back in Abilene. Lori and I began this group almost 4 years ago, and I attended the last 3 Christmas ones. So it made me sad not to be there this year, but so happy to see such a precious time continuing.
You know it is things like starting a Bunko group, a Bible study with dear friends, joining Facebook...that keep us connected...keep us part of a community...interlinked, leaning on each other. Now, in O'Fallon I'm so thankful that I try to always be inclusive vs. exclusive...because their comes a time when we are all "The New Kid" and being invited to something really means a lot. So if you have a Christmas party coming up or an ornament exchange...think of someone that is new and invite her. It can truly make a huge difference. We all want to be pursued, captivating to someone. I know I've appreciate all the sweet gestures, kind words that have come my way.

Really cute...

Well, I have to brag on "practically my sister-in-law" Libby Barker. You can view her blog from mine. She is actually my sister-in-law's sister...so what is that to me??? Anyway, Libby is just an AMAZING woman, and has recently started doing photography. So over Thanksgiving break, my sister-in-law, Lanie Walters, mentioned Libby could take some snapshots of us. I was thinking, "Oh, that would be nice." Never expecting that Libby would do an ABSOLUTE INCREDIBLE job. I mean we dressed for a day at the farm there in Paduch, Kentucky...rode in the golf carts, ran down to the lake...basically just had a blast...then a last minute "photo shoot"???
We were all mismatched. Travis broke the chair. I mean just typical stuff for our clan. Hence, why we don't normally do the professional picture thing. Boy, did Libby have an amazing eye, though. I know I keep saying "AMAZING." I just can't get over how Libby turned our shambles into a masterpiece. I just have to share one of my favorite photos she took. So rarely does a camera truly, in my opinion, capture the essence of my girls and Libby did.
Libby, you are SO PRECIOUS to us! We just love you!

No longer a Captain

The day before Thanksgiving, we got to celebrate Travis' promotion to Major. After being a Captain for 6 years, he was anxious to finally pin on a different rank. Most of his family was able to come which was EXTRA special. I didn't originally plan on tearing up, but Travis said so many precious things to the girls, his parents, his brother/sister (and spouses), and me...that it was hard not to. Lynn, the picture of the cake is for you. They actually did a great job!

Peace on Earth

As I look at my girls, I feel hopeful about the future. If we could all be as optimistic as little children...to believe anything is possible...to love people just as they are...to lavishly demonstrate that love...to sincerely be proud of others' accomplishments...to wake up in anticipation of the wonderful day that lies ahead. The greatest lessons in life can be found in watching children simply be.

Getting Bigger

The Magic House...

Travis was off for Veterans' Day and we had a blast visiting the Magic House and Science Center. Downtown St. Louis offers so many wonderful things for little ones to do and see.

http://www.magichouse.org/ (Nationally acclaimed children’s museum offers more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits for kids from one to 101. Explore the Children’s Village, Math Path and three-story slide.)

http://www.slsc.org/ (Super cool!!! The even have the latest Harry Potter in the IMAX theater...too scary for the kids, but Travis and I would love to go back for a date night.)

Change...

In some parts of the country "change" can be seen so clearly. As I was walking this morning, I was struck by the beauty of the trees in my backyard here in O'Fallon, Illinois...such brilliant colors (reds, oranges, yellows, and golds)...absolutely gorgeous. I was struck by the "changing" of the season...Fall turning to Winter...soon to be Spring.
For years, I haven't been able to witness such beauty by our Heavenly Father...due to the dry climate of both West Texas and Colorado...and yet here the colors are so majestic. As I reflected, on last night's events with the Presidential race, a sense of peace filled my heart. Change can be good. It can be a beautiful thing...a natural process. My heart couldn't be happier for seeing blacks realize that they too could be president...or any minority group for that matter. I thought about the children I taught in school, and how they would reflect upon this election. Would this inspire them to achieve greatness? Would this give them renewed strength? Obama inspired people that had never voted before to take a chance...unprecedented numbers at the polls. In some ways, I wish McCain/Palin could have inspired us more. I prayed so hard that God would breathe on us yesterday, that the Holy Spirit would renew our hearts and God's will be done. Literally for 3 hours among different friends, we prayed diligently for our country...for compassion, for mercy....I fought down on my knees for the unborn. I went to the polls. I chose LIFE. I guess I thought, when McCain didn't become president, I would be hurt or upset, fearful, perhaps anger...but I don't feel any of those emotions. I awoke with one singular song on my heart.

Send Your Rain (Kelly Carpenter)

Send Your rain, oh Lord
Send Your rain, oh Lord
Send Your rain to your people (repeat)
Send Your rain bring Your Kingdom
Chorus:
Soften our hearts and pour out Your Spirit
Fill us anew, let Your rain come
Soften our hearts and pour out Your Spirit
Fill us anew, let Your rain come
May Your kingdom come
And Your will be done
On the earth as it is in heaven
May Your kingdom come
And Your will be done
On the earth, bring Your kingdom

Have no doubt that I want Obama's heart to change for the unborn. I wish he would fight passionately for them and their protection. Join me in praying that God softens his heart. My heart is heavy with the reality that the Democrats are the majority in the White House and both House/Senate. I worry about "Checks and Balances." I worry horrible legislation will quickly pass due to this majority. Here is the Scripture though that keeps coming to mind.
Philippians 2: 1-12
1If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. (Let us continue to remember Jesus + anything is less than Jesus) 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. (Get rid of agendas...be strong in Christ alone.) 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! (Stand strong, but in humility, be obedient to His Word, continue doing what Jesus calls us to do: feed the hungry, give hope to the hopeless, be compassionate, not giving into our sinful desires--endure persecution for this if need be.) Then because of Christ's obedience and humility, God exalted Him. 9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (May I never be the reason someone doesn't come to Christ)
Change can be scary, but yesterday I asked God to CHANGE ME. In our churches, we have feared change. We have been afraid to do things differently then we've always done them...and that fear has paralyzed us...to where we are no longer effective...clinging to this idea that the church is merely a small remnant of God's people. Do you remember the Million Man March that Promise Keepers did almost 11 years ago? GOD'S LOVE...in its' purest form...could have brought way more people to Grant Park last night than Obama did. I don't care about being the majority. I don't care about being seen as different. But I know in my heart that if others TRULY could grasp God's love for them...there would be no stopping them. Shame on us for adding anything to Christ Jesus. We have added and watered down His message long enough. Jesus is ENOUGH!

Precious to my heart...

WOW! Three different posts in one day. I'm going for some kind of record. Really, I've just been slacking off on posting. I guess too busy making memories.
This is a random collection of photos, but precious to my heart.
Photo of: The puppet with Grandpa Walters and the girls. --You have to know Travis' dad. He is hilarious. He was cracking us up so bad one morning. He was being so silly, and we all couldn't stop laughing. The girls really love him and Grandma so much. Since living in Illinois, we get to see them so much more, and it has been so precious to us.
Photo of: Travis and the girls on the couch--Travis is just an AMAZING DAD! I can't tell you how wonderful he is with the girls. Here they are reading together. When I flew down for my 10 year reunion at ACU, he kept all 3 girls. They had an absolute blast together. Unfortunately, he isn't one for taking pictures...so no evidence. LOL
Photos of Mollie's friends and Ellie's friends: These are precious because it is a reminder of how good God has been to provide friends here in Illinois. The one of Ellie's friends cracks me up, because I thought I was leaving a church that was very fertile (15 showers I helped host in one year) only to come to a church with many babies, too.
Photo: of Carlie's artwork--She did this picture the other day. I know I'm partial, but she truly has a gift for coloring. The ducks are AMAZING! She thinks of this stuff in her head and then draws it on paper.

It's a Church thing...

Well, I have to admit my weekend in Abilene was AMAZING!!! God was so good! I really got to spend at least sometime with many dear friends. Every moment I was there, I was catching up with someone I love and cherish...first, Robyn...then Becky H....then, my MOPS girlfriends at Tuscany's...then the carnival at ACU's Homecoming...the next morning, the parade (Oh, how I love Karin)...lunch with Megan (oh, how I love her)...my old neighbors...the ACU football game...WE WON!!...then Starbucks with Lori, Heather, Shana, Allison, Julie (some precious Bunko/Church girlfriends.) It truly was INCREDIBLE, and there were so many others that I had hoped to see and spend more time with. Unfortunately, I was only there for a total of 48 hours. The best part of all, though...was going back to Southern Hills. I had heard many things about their new service called "Refresh" and decided to go to both services that morning. I figured "Why not?" I can not describe in mere words how strong the Holy Spirit was working that morning in my heart and in the hearts of my brothers and sisters in Christ. You can see a portion of it from my friend's blog http://tammymarcelain.blogspot.com/2008/10/refreshcardboard-testimonies.html They did what they call "Cardboard Testimonies." Such a flood of emotions...to see Jack looking so good and Lindi and Mark. I just can't describe it. To know someone's struggles and then see their complete dependence on Christ was inspiring to say the least. They did a video about how x +n

I also wanted to post some pictures from our new church here in Illinois. They have a dynamic program for Carlie's age and up. This particular Sunday, Travis was selected to carry the Ark of the Covenant and Carlie played one of the spies that Rahab hide. We also are helping out with Bible Hour...hence, "Grandpa Jones" the old man puppet played by Travis. We do a puppet show where basically Grandpa Jones goes through the Bible explaining how it is God's love story to us...beginning with Creation. Then we interjected several songs to get the kids moving.

It's a Fall thing...

Here is one photo I like to call "Pumpkin Cascade." Cathy's little boy is right above my head, and once he got to his spot...the pumpkins began rolling. CRAZY!

This is Carlie as the girl from Hunchback (sp?) from Notre Dame. Esmeralda...I think. She is especially proud of her black wig. She ended up wanting to be a mermaid for actual Halloween night. I'm glad we had several "Fall" things to go to.
Then here is Mollie wearing the Princess Belle dress I made her. Not too shabby, since I can't sew clothes. Though, I was sick to find an absolutely gorgeous Princess Belle dress at Target for what the material cost me to make her one. Oh, well. I guess since she chose a different dress to wear for actual Halloween, I will go back to buying all of her clothes. :)

Then this is my cute little strawberry. Isn't she precious! I could just love on her all the time.

Check this out...

Ashley Phillps, a fellow blogger, helped do the design work for my mom's latest blog. I, of course, did all the post and inserted pictures. I was hoping some of you could check it out. My mom said it has not been coming up on her computer. I'm not exactly sure way. I think Ashley fixed it. The blog address is www.changingthefaceofaging.blogspot.com. Tell me what you think? My mom has been a Mary Kay consultant for years and is now adding several things to her business. She thought having a blog would help.

Freedom...

Since this is my blog, I am free to response to the comments made about abortion concerning my last entry. In many ways, I have viewed my blog as my own opportunity to journal...mediate...ponder the issues of Today...not necessarily as a sound board for others' viewpoints. Anyone can create their own PERSONAL blog to voice the desires and concerns of their heart. If you are passionate about something, then I suggest you create a blog. I am relatively new to the blogger world. I now see how others feel freedom to say whatever they wish. I welcome that. It is a freedom given to every individual in America. Here is my response though...not merely under "Comments" but as the creator of this blog thus able to "Post."

In regards to abortion--
The "government" did not tell us to have sex and then force us to keep the baby we conceived. If Roe vs. Wade was overturned it would merely be the "government" trying to protect the precious miracle that was created because a woman and a man CHOSE to have unprotected sex and now regret it. If the government was FORCING women to conceive children and then forcing them to carry those children to full-term...then Yes, those practices would be closer to that of breeding horses or Hitler's desire to have a pure race. I could see how people would rise up and say the woman's rights had been violated.
I also want to protect any of my readers from further exploring information about the first comment made. The man who commented has a very offensive website, and I would suggest NOT visiting it. I found his comments to be very disturbing and utterly inappropriate. I'm concerned that he even was able to find my blog.
On a personal note, I know as I look down at friends' blogs...most if not all...speak of wonderful, happy events...crafts made, good times with girlfriends, fun things to do with the kiddos...Oh, they are so precious! How I look forward to reading them...sharing in the moment. Here is the thing though. Abortion is a hot topic. It isn't always pleasant to talk about or read about. I feel though, that when I do make a scrapbook of this blog or however my children gain access to it...I want them to see my passion, my conviction, my heart...not just the good times. My girls are so precious to me, and I want them to now how I feel to the very core. I want them to know that when we conceived them...from the moment the pregnancy test was positive...they were the most precious miracle we could have ever asked God for. Every child needs to be loved and protected. I understand the reality that "natural" parents don't always want to love the children they conceived. I'm a child of divorce. My "natural" father didn't want to have anything to do with me. What he found in a bottle meant more to him then me. My dad now though...would willing give his life for mine. His love has given me courage, passion, a desire to give back to a hurting world. I recently heard a dear friend mention someone very close to both of us that was a somewhat "failed" abortion. The mother had a desire to abort...at that time, had to cross state lines to get it done, but the doctor refused because she was so far along. Now, that she is in her late 60s...guess who has been the "Apple of her Eye" all these years? This daughter...Guess, who stood by the mother's father, her grandfather...during his dying days and try to comfort him...changed his soiled linens...This daughter. A daughter that wouldn't have been born had one doctor not made the decision to NOT abort. Life has many regrets. We all make mistakes, but those of abortion long leave their scars.

The Great Debate...

Wow...I'm so fired up! I tried to get all my frustrations out on the treadmill today at the Y, but still feel the tension of it. Up to this point, I was uncommitted to who I thought would be the best president. McCain said it right. Obama is a very eloquent speaker. I was attracted to his style and had accepted the fact that perhaps "Big Government" was the change we needed. It would seem the average American needs a "parental" figure to keep them in check...to limit their spending, to tell them what is best for them, etc. I get it! I saw the emails passed around speaking negatively about Obama. I gave them their due attention, but didn't really let it sway me. Then last night sealed the deal for me. He confirmed some of my worse fears. These allegations going around are true, and to see him speak so nonchalantly about them...disturbed me.
He claimed that his interaction will Bill Ayers (?) was as an acquaintance, no more. Really! Let me think...I can't think of anyone I have ever interacted with that actually bombed something on American soil. Have you? Oh, I'm around people of differing opinions. I don't necessarily agree with everyone, but someone who has bombed something--an act of terrorism? Sorry, I don't think "Mainstreet" America has many "acquaintances" like that either.
I am very much anti-abortion and believe in the sanctity of life, but if I had an "acquaintance" that had mentioned bombing an abortion clinic for the "CAUSE." I would be like, "Are you crazy? You don't bomb abortion clinics." Turn the tables, does Obama have evidence of McCain associating with people that bombed abortion clinics? No! If he did, the Democratic party would be all over that. This wasn't a one time interaction with this man...serving on a board together. Come on!
Oh, I am so glad, the abortion issue came up. Finally, I got to see Obama's direct response... without the media filter. Here is the thing. When the debate on the pro-choice side focused on how a baby was more like a blob of tissue...a fetus...whether than a baby. I could see how they could view abortion as any other medical procedure...similar to a person's desire to remove a tumor or something cancerous...no emotion. Gotta it. Don't agree with it, but respect it. But to have Obama say abortions are unfortunate...shows me that he does not view the baby as a fetus or a blob of tissue, but as a human life...with a heartbeat...but he still is willing to stand firm that it is up to the woman/mother to see that pregnancy to full term. That is a whole different ball game for me. If you DO believe that it is a BABY, and still think abortion is okay, then what is wrong with any mother deciding to kill a child, in the womb or not? The excuses of why to have an abortion such as: lack of emotional/financial support, too young, not ready, no desire to be a mother...don't play out if you knew the child they were referring to was 3 years old. Mothers have acted on those impulses once the child is indeed born, and have been put in jail. Perhaps it should be a criminal offense whether than merely a "moral" choice.
I mean look at Britney Spears' sister. Rumors she is pregnant again...possibly will abort. I mean come on...using it as a form of birth control. She knew sex without a condom could result in an unwanted pregnancy. I was also curious to read more about this Born Alive legislation. See newspaper article http://worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=78189. Really though...this is what my heart is crying out. I know so many godly women that desperately want children...natural or adopted. I can't tell you the number that struggle with infertility. Could perhaps this overwhelming infertility problem in women these days be a way of spurring us on to desperately reach out to these mothers and say, "If you don't want your child, could I raise them?" Could we take the focus off of a mother's rights and make it more about being able to adopt children for less? Most adoptions, not just foreign, can reach up into the $20,000 range before everything is said and done. The lawyers are the ones benefiting the most...because the paperwork is so costly.
Enough of that...on to education. Another subject that I'm equally passionate about. You want to know why America lags behind other countries in academics? We play to the lowest common denominator. For example, my sister in law, Denise, brought up a more than valid point. She is in college. Paid full price for a course on Microsoft Office 2000. After hearing the same lesson repeated numerous times, she decided to voice a compliant. "Why am I paying full price for a course that is suppose to be teaching me about Microsoft Office 2000 and here it is almost Christmas and we have yet to get past Chp. 2...because people in my class aren't getting it. My employer we see on my resume that I took a course in Microsoft Office 2000. He won't realize I only learned up to Chp. 2...nor do I imagine you will refund my tuition money to make up for the fact that what I paid for vs. what I got...are TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS." You see our education system is like that. I saw it first hand. We couldn't move onto division until EVERY child new their multiplication facts. So those ready for division and beyond, had to wait patiently until John Doe caught up. So tutor them after school. Fine! I did that...stayed until 5 o'clock one day helping a child with his work. Do you think his parents even remembered to pick him up? No. I then had to drive him home. To them--me tutoring Johnny was two extra hours of free childcare. Of course, some children do have parents that really care, and they struggle still. Oh, how I loved when the light would turn on for a child during summer school. My heart goes out to those kids, and I will go above and beyond to help them.
Here is the thing though, more often then not...even with my own daughters...the reason they don't excel is because no one pushes them to succeed. Human nature wants to only do as much is as required or expected. If the expectations are low...even better. The same parents who are sitting back wondering how the "Government" is going to help them are raising the children that are wondering why they need do anything else in school but misbehave. Throwing money at the problem doesn't help. I knew of a school back in Wichita Falls, Texas that spent thousands on technology. You know where those computers ended up...a storage closet. Oh, but it looked like they were spending a ton of money on technology. Obama mentioned higher pay for teachers that showed performance...now, realize I was a public school teacher that performed and saw results. You know what I heard/thought. Number 1-- Teach the Test and Number 2--I did my job like that despite the pay and would do it again just as well. Nothing is stronger than the heart of a volunteer. Not to say, I'm against paying teachers more...but to make the point that extra money isn't going to make a teacher want to do more than she is already doing. A true teacher loves her job, and will do whatever it takes to help those kids. You can see that so much in a Christian school. You think teachers get paid little to nothing...imagine what Christian school teachers get paid. Mrs. Evans, Carlie's teacher, is passionate and goes above and beyond. My own mother-in-law would amaze you if you knew what she has done not only for the children in her class, but their parents as well. Obama isn't going to pay Mrs. Evans or my mother-in-law one more dime...though, they are changing lives everyday.
I guess it isn't so much about Obama, anymore. I believe McCain IS going to bring about change. You change people's hearts, inspire them, give them the tools to succeed, hold them accountable...you will see America change for the better from the ground up. I loved when McCain defended the people that came to his rallies...those war veterans and military wives...and said he was proud of him. I believe now that McCain will fight just as hard for you and me if given the opportunity to be president. Your record does matter! Anyone can have a good game face on for a few months during a campaign. I'm more concerned about what he has done and will do...then his eloquence as a speaker. Sorry, Obama...I'm voting for McCain and I'm an Illinois resident now. Gotta love the military!!!

So Natural...

Again, we are doing things here I've never been able to do. Believe it or not...I've never actually picked an apple from a tree until today, nor been in a real pumpkin patch. O'Fallon, Illinois is in my ways very rural. There are so many beautiful fields of corn...and everything is so fresh. The girls and I went to a local farm called Eckert's. We rode on a tractor to an apple orchard and then went a little further to the pumpkin patch. Earlier this year, peaches and blackberries were in season. We have all the comforts of living in the country...Fall festivities, movies at the park, fresh vegetables, bomb fires, potlucks at church, super friendly neighbors and friends...but the luxury of St. Louis being only 20 minutes away...with tons of great shopping. It truly is the ideal place to live. My heart for so long wanted to get back to Abilene as soon as possible, but God has given me such a sense of peace that this is the moment we are in, RIGHT NOW, and to enjoy every minute of it.
Oh, and I made their shirts. Do you like them? The fresh air up here has brought out my creative side even more.
