Check this out...

Ashley Phillps, a fellow blogger, helped do the design work for my mom's latest blog. I, of course, did all the post and inserted pictures. I was hoping some of you could check it out. My mom said it has not been coming up on her computer. I'm not exactly sure way. I think Ashley fixed it. The blog address is www.changingthefaceofaging.blogspot.com. Tell me what you think? My mom has been a Mary Kay consultant for years and is now adding several things to her business. She thought having a blog would help.

Freedom...

Since this is my blog, I am free to response to the comments made about abortion concerning my last entry. In many ways, I have viewed my blog as my own opportunity to journal...mediate...ponder the issues of Today...not necessarily as a sound board for others' viewpoints. Anyone can create their own PERSONAL blog to voice the desires and concerns of their heart. If you are passionate about something, then I suggest you create a blog. I am relatively new to the blogger world. I now see how others feel freedom to say whatever they wish. I welcome that. It is a freedom given to every individual in America. Here is my response though...not merely under "Comments" but as the creator of this blog thus able to "Post."

In regards to abortion--
The "government" did not tell us to have sex and then force us to keep the baby we conceived. If Roe vs. Wade was overturned it would merely be the "government" trying to protect the precious miracle that was created because a woman and a man CHOSE to have unprotected sex and now regret it. If the government was FORCING women to conceive children and then forcing them to carry those children to full-term...then Yes, those practices would be closer to that of breeding horses or Hitler's desire to have a pure race. I could see how people would rise up and say the woman's rights had been violated.
I also want to protect any of my readers from further exploring information about the first comment made. The man who commented has a very offensive website, and I would suggest NOT visiting it. I found his comments to be very disturbing and utterly inappropriate. I'm concerned that he even was able to find my blog.
On a personal note, I know as I look down at friends' blogs...most if not all...speak of wonderful, happy events...crafts made, good times with girlfriends, fun things to do with the kiddos...Oh, they are so precious! How I look forward to reading them...sharing in the moment. Here is the thing though. Abortion is a hot topic. It isn't always pleasant to talk about or read about. I feel though, that when I do make a scrapbook of this blog or however my children gain access to it...I want them to see my passion, my conviction, my heart...not just the good times. My girls are so precious to me, and I want them to now how I feel to the very core. I want them to know that when we conceived them...from the moment the pregnancy test was positive...they were the most precious miracle we could have ever asked God for. Every child needs to be loved and protected. I understand the reality that "natural" parents don't always want to love the children they conceived. I'm a child of divorce. My "natural" father didn't want to have anything to do with me. What he found in a bottle meant more to him then me. My dad now though...would willing give his life for mine. His love has given me courage, passion, a desire to give back to a hurting world. I recently heard a dear friend mention someone very close to both of us that was a somewhat "failed" abortion. The mother had a desire to abort...at that time, had to cross state lines to get it done, but the doctor refused because she was so far along. Now, that she is in her late 60s...guess who has been the "Apple of her Eye" all these years? This daughter...Guess, who stood by the mother's father, her grandfather...during his dying days and try to comfort him...changed his soiled linens...This daughter. A daughter that wouldn't have been born had one doctor not made the decision to NOT abort. Life has many regrets. We all make mistakes, but those of abortion long leave their scars.

The Great Debate...

Wow...I'm so fired up! I tried to get all my frustrations out on the treadmill today at the Y, but still feel the tension of it. Up to this point, I was uncommitted to who I thought would be the best president. McCain said it right. Obama is a very eloquent speaker. I was attracted to his style and had accepted the fact that perhaps "Big Government" was the change we needed. It would seem the average American needs a "parental" figure to keep them in check...to limit their spending, to tell them what is best for them, etc. I get it! I saw the emails passed around speaking negatively about Obama. I gave them their due attention, but didn't really let it sway me. Then last night sealed the deal for me. He confirmed some of my worse fears. These allegations going around are true, and to see him speak so nonchalantly about them...disturbed me.
He claimed that his interaction will Bill Ayers (?) was as an acquaintance, no more. Really! Let me think...I can't think of anyone I have ever interacted with that actually bombed something on American soil. Have you? Oh, I'm around people of differing opinions. I don't necessarily agree with everyone, but someone who has bombed something--an act of terrorism? Sorry, I don't think "Mainstreet" America has many "acquaintances" like that either.
I am very much anti-abortion and believe in the sanctity of life, but if I had an "acquaintance" that had mentioned bombing an abortion clinic for the "CAUSE." I would be like, "Are you crazy? You don't bomb abortion clinics." Turn the tables, does Obama have evidence of McCain associating with people that bombed abortion clinics? No! If he did, the Democratic party would be all over that. This wasn't a one time interaction with this man...serving on a board together. Come on!
Oh, I am so glad, the abortion issue came up. Finally, I got to see Obama's direct response... without the media filter. Here is the thing. When the debate on the pro-choice side focused on how a baby was more like a blob of tissue...a fetus...whether than a baby. I could see how they could view abortion as any other medical procedure...similar to a person's desire to remove a tumor or something cancerous...no emotion. Gotta it. Don't agree with it, but respect it. But to have Obama say abortions are unfortunate...shows me that he does not view the baby as a fetus or a blob of tissue, but as a human life...with a heartbeat...but he still is willing to stand firm that it is up to the woman/mother to see that pregnancy to full term. That is a whole different ball game for me. If you DO believe that it is a BABY, and still think abortion is okay, then what is wrong with any mother deciding to kill a child, in the womb or not? The excuses of why to have an abortion such as: lack of emotional/financial support, too young, not ready, no desire to be a mother...don't play out if you knew the child they were referring to was 3 years old. Mothers have acted on those impulses once the child is indeed born, and have been put in jail. Perhaps it should be a criminal offense whether than merely a "moral" choice.
I mean look at Britney Spears' sister. Rumors she is pregnant again...possibly will abort. I mean come on...using it as a form of birth control. She knew sex without a condom could result in an unwanted pregnancy. I was also curious to read more about this Born Alive legislation. See newspaper article http://worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=78189. Really though...this is what my heart is crying out. I know so many godly women that desperately want children...natural or adopted. I can't tell you the number that struggle with infertility. Could perhaps this overwhelming infertility problem in women these days be a way of spurring us on to desperately reach out to these mothers and say, "If you don't want your child, could I raise them?" Could we take the focus off of a mother's rights and make it more about being able to adopt children for less? Most adoptions, not just foreign, can reach up into the $20,000 range before everything is said and done. The lawyers are the ones benefiting the most...because the paperwork is so costly.
Enough of that...on to education. Another subject that I'm equally passionate about. You want to know why America lags behind other countries in academics? We play to the lowest common denominator. For example, my sister in law, Denise, brought up a more than valid point. She is in college. Paid full price for a course on Microsoft Office 2000. After hearing the same lesson repeated numerous times, she decided to voice a compliant. "Why am I paying full price for a course that is suppose to be teaching me about Microsoft Office 2000 and here it is almost Christmas and we have yet to get past Chp. 2...because people in my class aren't getting it. My employer we see on my resume that I took a course in Microsoft Office 2000. He won't realize I only learned up to Chp. 2...nor do I imagine you will refund my tuition money to make up for the fact that what I paid for vs. what I got...are TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS." You see our education system is like that. I saw it first hand. We couldn't move onto division until EVERY child new their multiplication facts. So those ready for division and beyond, had to wait patiently until John Doe caught up. So tutor them after school. Fine! I did that...stayed until 5 o'clock one day helping a child with his work. Do you think his parents even remembered to pick him up? No. I then had to drive him home. To them--me tutoring Johnny was two extra hours of free childcare. Of course, some children do have parents that really care, and they struggle still. Oh, how I loved when the light would turn on for a child during summer school. My heart goes out to those kids, and I will go above and beyond to help them.
Here is the thing though, more often then not...even with my own daughters...the reason they don't excel is because no one pushes them to succeed. Human nature wants to only do as much is as required or expected. If the expectations are low...even better. The same parents who are sitting back wondering how the "Government" is going to help them are raising the children that are wondering why they need do anything else in school but misbehave. Throwing money at the problem doesn't help. I knew of a school back in Wichita Falls, Texas that spent thousands on technology. You know where those computers ended up...a storage closet. Oh, but it looked like they were spending a ton of money on technology. Obama mentioned higher pay for teachers that showed performance...now, realize I was a public school teacher that performed and saw results. You know what I heard/thought. Number 1-- Teach the Test and Number 2--I did my job like that despite the pay and would do it again just as well. Nothing is stronger than the heart of a volunteer. Not to say, I'm against paying teachers more...but to make the point that extra money isn't going to make a teacher want to do more than she is already doing. A true teacher loves her job, and will do whatever it takes to help those kids. You can see that so much in a Christian school. You think teachers get paid little to nothing...imagine what Christian school teachers get paid. Mrs. Evans, Carlie's teacher, is passionate and goes above and beyond. My own mother-in-law would amaze you if you knew what she has done not only for the children in her class, but their parents as well. Obama isn't going to pay Mrs. Evans or my mother-in-law one more dime...though, they are changing lives everyday.
I guess it isn't so much about Obama, anymore. I believe McCain IS going to bring about change. You change people's hearts, inspire them, give them the tools to succeed, hold them accountable...you will see America change for the better from the ground up. I loved when McCain defended the people that came to his rallies...those war veterans and military wives...and said he was proud of him. I believe now that McCain will fight just as hard for you and me if given the opportunity to be president. Your record does matter! Anyone can have a good game face on for a few months during a campaign. I'm more concerned about what he has done and will do...then his eloquence as a speaker. Sorry, Obama...I'm voting for McCain and I'm an Illinois resident now. Gotta love the military!!!

So Natural...

Again, we are doing things here I've never been able to do. Believe it or not...I've never actually picked an apple from a tree until today, nor been in a real pumpkin patch. O'Fallon, Illinois is in my ways very rural. There are so many beautiful fields of corn...and everything is so fresh. The girls and I went to a local farm called Eckert's. We rode on a tractor to an apple orchard and then went a little further to the pumpkin patch. Earlier this year, peaches and blackberries were in season. We have all the comforts of living in the country...Fall festivities, movies at the park, fresh vegetables, bomb fires, potlucks at church, super friendly neighbors and friends...but the luxury of St. Louis being only 20 minutes away...with tons of great shopping. It truly is the ideal place to live. My heart for so long wanted to get back to Abilene as soon as possible, but God has given me such a sense of peace that this is the moment we are in, RIGHT NOW, and to enjoy every minute of it.
Oh, and I made their shirts. Do you like them? The fresh air up here has brought out my creative side even more.

Getting Settled In..

Well, Illinois is finally beginning to feel like home. We are making so many wonderful memories here. We couldn't be happier with our church or the girls' school.

The first picture is of the special Friday snack I made for Carlie's class. She is loving school, and this particular week they were learning about the post office (Community Helpers). So I made "delicious letters" for all her classmates. You may not be able to
see the stamp, but it is actually a picture of Carlie. She was so surprised!

Some of you know that I've been exercising lately. So I decided to get ambitious and walk to Carlie's school and pick her up the other day. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and has been for several weeks...so I figured "Why not?". Here is the path we travel on. It is about a mile. It is so beautiful...the trees, the white fence, the fresh air, etc. The path comes up to the back of our house, and alongside is a ranch with horses. We have done it several days now. I feel like we have been transported back in time...when life happened at a slower pace, and people "lived in the moment." The girls are so much faster than me. They love to run ahead of me.

The picture on the right is Carlie and Mollie having a puppet show. I decided to spice up Bible Hour at our church and constructed a puppet stage out of PVC pipe. The church already had the puppets. Travis will be playing the part of "Grandpa Jones." So appropriate don't you think. He knows everything about the Bible...supposedly. LOL I can't wait to see how the children react.

The final picture is of the foyer at First Baptist. I took a picture of it, because a similar structure is in the blueprints for Southern Hills Church of Christ back in Abilene. I had never seen such a huge playground inside a church until the elders showed us the blueprints during the Transforming Community night. All of us with children were excited to see it, and hoped it would happen at Southern Hills. Well anyway, First Baptist actually has one...and boy, it is AWESOME! All the families with young children congregate here. Moms talking...kids playing. It truly does help facilitate community. I wish Southern Hills would go ahead and break ground and begin bringing their vision to life.

FALLing in Love with Jesus

Enjoy the pumpkin patch pictures from 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. 2008 will be coming out soon...featuring our newest Lil' Pumpkin, Ellie Grace. :)

I was getting out some fall decorations and came across this. The first is a poem I love to print on card stock and pass out to either trick or treaters at my door or at the church's Trunk or Treat. The second is an activity I love to do after visiting a local pumpkin patch.

Pumpkins

Once a friend was asked what it was like to be a Christian. Halloween was coming soon, and she thought of how to explain it.
Here was her response:
“Well, God picks you from the patch and brings you in and washes all the dirt on the outside that you got from being around all the other pumpkins. Then He cuts off the top and rakes all the yucky stuff out from inside. He removes all those seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all to see. It is our choice to either stay outside and rot on the vine or come inside and be something new and bright.

Then you can add you own information here...such as
Fairview Heights Church of Christ desires to help place God’s light in your child’s heart. Come and experience it for yourself!

Sunday Worship beginning at 9:30 a.m.

I have a story by Liz Curtis Higgs, called The Pumpkin Parable. GREAT for little ones! My favorite thing to do is have a play date with girlfriends and everyone bring a pumpkin. First we read the story, then I have cards with the "Pumpkin Prayer" already made up for each family. We read the cards as we carve our pumpkins. It is wonderful getting away from the idea of Halloween having to be scary and instead choosing to focus on God's love. It is always a BIG HIT with my girls. I also like to have pumpkin cookies or some kind of fall snack for everyone to enjoy.

"Pumpkin Prayer"{cut off top of pumpkin} Lord, open my mind so I can learn new things about you. {remove innards} Remove the things in my life that don’t please you. Forgive the wrong things I do and help me to forgive others.{cut open eyes} Open my eyes to see the beauty you’ve made in the world around me. {cut out nose} I’m sorry for the times I’ve turned my nose at the good food you provide.{cut out mouth} Let everything I say please You.{light the candle} Lord, help me show your light to others through the things I do. Amen

Ramsey's Bailout Proposal

Since we now live in Illinois, I contacted my Senator, Senator Obama, and requested he consider Dave Ramsey's proposal. I, personally, claim no expertises in understanding the underlying issues involved with the present economic crisis. I also understand from watching the news that MOST of our representatives feel we are not educated enough to understand what has happened...because if we did we would adamantly support their $700 billion dollar plan. WHATEVER...All I know is that Dave Ramsey has changed the course of our lives, and has been the only voice that cared enough to explain financial concepts to me in a way I could understand...a way the average American could understand. So with that, I trust his proposal vs. all the double talk going on in the Senate and House of Representatives. I would urge you to contact your Senator or Representative...and make your voice known.

Dear Senator Obama,

I know there are a lot of plans being offered at this time to help relieve the economic crisis. This is the plan I'm supporting. It is given by Dave Ramsey, a man I highly respect. Due to the Financial Peace University course he teaches, our family is completely debt free today. We are the middle class you are always saying you want to help. Dave helped to make financial concepts easy for the average American to understand through his course. We have full funded our IRAs for the last 7 years and made many sacrifices to be debt free...when neighbors and friends were living way outside their means.
I'm outraged by the events leading up to this, but prepared because we have long been saving for a rainy day such as today.
Sincerely,
Dorothy Walters

The plan is as follows:
Years of bad decisions and stupid mistakes have created an economic nightmare in this country, but $700 billion in new debt is not the answer. As a tax-paying American citizen, I will not support any congressperson who votes to implement such a policy. Instead, I submit the following three steps:
Common Sense Plan.
I. INSURANCE
A. Insure the subprime bonds/mortgages with an underlying FHA-type insurance. Government-insured and backed loans would have an instant market all over the world, creating immediate and needed liquidity.
B. In order for a company to accept the government-backed insurance, they must do two things:
1. Rewrite any mortgage that is more than three months delinquent to a 6% fixed-rate mortgage. a. Roll all back payments with no late fees or legal costs into the balance. This brings homeowners current and allows them a chance to keep their homes. b. Cancel all prepayment penalties to encourage refinancing or the sale of the property to pay off the bad loan. In the event of foreclosure or short sale, the borrower will not be held liable for any deficit balance. FHA does this now, and that encourages mortgage companies to go the extra mile whileworking with the borrower—again limiting foreclosures and ruined lives.
2. Cancel ALL golden parachutes of EXISTING and FUTURE CEOs and executive team members as long as the company holds these government-insured bonds/mortgages. This keeps underperforming executives from being paid when they don’t do their jobs.
C. This backstop will cost less than $50 billion—a small fraction of the current proposal.

II. MARK TO MARKET
A. Remove mark to market accounting rules for two years on only subprime Tier III bonds/mortgages. This keeps companies from being forced to artificially mark down bonds/mortgages below the value of the underlying mortgages and real estate.
B. This move creates patience in the market and has an immediate stabilizing effect on failing and ailing banks—and it costs the taxpayer nothing.

III. CAPITAL GAINS TAX
A. Remove the capital gains tax completely. Investors will flood the real estate and stock market in search of tax-free profits, creating tremendous—and immediate—liquidity in the markets. Again, this costs the taxpayer nothing.
B. This move will be seen as a lightning rod politically because many will say it is helping the rich. The truth is the rich will benefit, but it will be their money that stimulates the economy. This will enable all Americans to have more stable jobs and retirement investments that go up instead of down. This is not a time for envy, and it’s not a time for politics. It’s time for all of us, as Americans, tostand up, speak out, and fix this mess.
